One night our friends from Japan took us out for Fugu (blowfish).   It was explained to us that the fugu served to us at this restaurant was a mountain version in which the swim bladder was not toxic.  I had no idea that there was such a thing and I was kinda sad that there wasn't a chance of dying but a great experience nonetheless.

The first dish was the gills served in torched sake.

Next fugu sashimi.  This had a nice clean taste.  The most similar taste that I can think of would be kawahagi (file fish).

The last dish was a fugu karaage.

Overall, a really tasty dinner and a great experience but in the end it felt something was missing since there was no risk.  I guess it is easy to say since I am alive and my mouth isn't tingling.

Lolz. You say friends from Japan; are you in Japan? Otherwise, did I miss the name of the restaurant? Most accounts say that fugu is pretty bland - yes no? Tojo was on this show feeding this guy fugu: http://gluttonforpunishment.tv/episodes/season-two/episode-thirteen and I'm pretty sure I saw Anthony Bourdain eat fugu once
